Free coloureds under the British rule in Trinidad

Free coloureds were neither slaves nor whites, they were just free. Most of them were of mixed races ex:( African-European) but some were just blacks who had been freed. In  1802 there were 5275 free coloureds and only 2261 whites. Some of the free coloureds were well off. The British felt threatened by the free coloureds and so implemented laws states author to "put them in their place". It was almost like South Africa under aparthied . Remember these free coloureds were mostly well educated people, ex: doctors, lawyers, planters, etc. However they were being given curfews and if out after nine thirty they had to carry torches, also they had to sit at the back of the church on rough benches. They opposed the laws and it was revoked but that was just in paper[ theory not practicality]. They were still being treated differently and could not get any job[ they were limited to some professions/position], ex: they could not of held a position above a white.
